The
town of Roudnice dates from the 12th century. Its most important
cultural development began in the 13th century since the Bishops
and then Archbishops of Prague had their seat there. Over time,
the castle became less important until it was purchased in the
16th century by Vilém Ro?mberk, the first husband of
Polyxena Lobkowicz. She then gave it to her son, Vaclav Eusebius,
the 2nd Prince Lobkowicz and Chancellor of Bohemia, who reconstructed
the castle in the 1630's in high Baroque style. Situated on
the Elbe river dominating the town square, this 250-room residence
and Ducal seat of the family was designed by the Italian architects
Caratti and Della Porta.
